How to Play Poker

No-Limit Texas Hold'em, the most popular poker game in the world.

The goal

Win the chips in the middle (the pot). You win a hand by having the best five-card hand at the end, or by betting so that everyone else folds.

Each player gets 2 private cards. Up to 5 shared cards are dealt face up in the middle. Make your best 5-card hand from any mix of your 2 cards and the 5 shared cards.

How a hand goes
  1. Blinds. The two players left of the dealer button (D) put in forced bets: the small blind and the big blind. This makes sure there is something to win.
  2. Pre-flop. Everyone gets 2 cards. Betting starts with the player left of the big blind.
  3. The flop. 3 shared cards are dealt. Another round of betting.
  4. The turn. A 4th shared card. Another round of betting.
  5. The river. The 5th and last shared card. Final round of betting.
  6. Showdown. Players still in show their cards. Best hand wins the pot. Equal hands split it.

The dealer button moves one seat to the left after every hand, so everyone takes turns paying the blinds.

Your options on your turn
FoldGive up the hand. You lose what you already put in.
CheckPass without betting (only when nobody has bet yet this round).
CallMatch the current bet to stay in.
Bet / RaisePut in more. A raise must be at least the size of the last bet or raise.
All-inBet every chip you have. No-limit means you can do this any time.

If you go all-in and others keep betting, you can only win what you matched (the main pot); the extra goes into a side pot between the others.

Playing on Picknation88
  • Open the Poker Room, then join a public table, create your own, or enter a private room code and password from a friend.
  • You can watch any table first. Tap an empty seat to sit down.
  • Buy-in is 40 to 100 big blinds (for example 400–1,000 chips at 5/10 blinds). Use “Add chips” between hands to top up to 100 big blinds.
  • A table needs at least 2 players. Until then it shows “Pending: waiting for players”.
  • You have 25 seconds per turn. If time runs out you automatically check or fold and are sat out. Press “I'm back” to play again.
  • “Leave table” cashes out your chips. Leaving during a hand folds it.
  • If you leave a table and come back within 30 minutes, you must buy in for at least what you left with.
  • Right now the Poker Room is just for fun: everyone gets 10,000 free chips and can refill when nearly out. Free chips have no cash value.
